Tea became a beverage after it had originally come about for medicinal usage. In China it attained the status of literature and song as one of the refined pastimes of the 8th century.

いきにたっした。じゅうごせいきにいたりにほんはこれをたかめていっしゅのしんびてきしゅきょうすなわちちゃどうにまですすめた。
Japan, arriving at the 15th century, took tea further to a kind of cult of aesthetic appreciation, eventually advancing it to the tea ceremony.

Notes: Interesting that he notes the 15th century, in particular, in relation to the advance of the tea cult in Japan. I would like to think that he is referring to Ikkyu or Takeno Joo, but we will see how it plays out. Time will tell.
